My Short Story: How I Got Tangled in the Web of Online Dating
When I was younger, I was already chatting with several girls at once on MSN Messenger, just trying to get someone’s attention long enough to reach that magical level — a real date. I was around 17, and what we now call online dating was simply chatting online back then. I never imagined that this simple activity would grow into the global system it is today.
As the years went by, I realized I was getting better and better at it — coming up with clever responses in seconds, helping a few friends along the way, and even catching the attention of women I never thought would notice me. Around the age of 20 or 21, one of my friends — someone I had helped a lot — introduced me to an online forum where people shared their experiences with women. They told stories about what kind of “tricks” and manipulative answers worked on certain girls. The forum was called PUA, short for Pick-Up Artist.
After digging into the content and meeting some of the people behind it, I quickly realized that tricks and manipulation were not my style. I wanted to be honest, authentic, and confident in my own skin. I started connecting with others who shared that mindset and learned a lot about women, confidence, communication, and self-growth.
Most of my strength was in my words — I loved typing and could chat with women for hours. Through that, I made real friends, deep connections, a few relationships, and very few enemies. Eventually, we began calling it online dating, and I even learned from one of the best coaches in my home country — a well-known expert who had written a book on the subject.
One day, that same coach reached the ultimate goal a true “PUA” could have: True happiness. For him, that meant getting married and building a family. Many people forget that the true goal in dating is to reach your happiest self — whatever that looks like for you.
After he retired, he encouraged me to take his place and continue helping others. I contacted the forum administrators, and they agreed — they gave me the highest moderator status, and I began helping dozens of people with their online dating struggles. Things grew so much that I was even invited to give a live speech at an event the summer I left my home country. Unfortunately, it had to be canceled because I was moving to the United States.
Ever since, I’ve called this country my home — and I truly feel we’ve reached a tipping point today. Younger generations need guidance now more than ever, from both men and women working together.
